Lockups

Fifteen ways to set the name.

The same mark and the same word, arranged fifteen ways, every one drawn from a single number so that no variant is winning because it was set larger than the others. Pick one and it becomes the lockup: it goes into the header, into the brand kit and into every file on the download page.

How these are drawn

The type is matched to the mark by cap height, not by font size. A 72px font is not 72px tall on the page, so setting the two numbers equal is what makes type look like it is floating next to a logo rather than locked to it. In every variant below, the capital B, or the whole two-line block where there is one, measures exactly the height of the mark beside it. Everything else, the gaps, the rules, the second line, is a fraction of that same number, which is why each one holds its proportions at 72px and at 22px without being redrawn.

Judge them at the small size first. Nearly all of them work large; the ones that still read at 22px are the ones you can actually use.

The options

Same two objects, fifteen arrangements.

Each card shows the variant at working size on paper, the same variant on Ink, and then at header size, which is where a lockup either survives or does not.

15 variants
  • Beside, name only

The mark and one word, cap height matched exactly to the mark. The shortest thing that is still the brand, for a header or a favicon strip.

  • Beside, name over descriptor

The two-line block measures the height of the mark: Bonang carrying most of it, Technologies as the line underneath. The arrangement most identities settle on.

  • Beside, one line, two inks

The full name on a single line, the second word let go to Fade. What the site header prints today, with the type raised to the height of the mark.

  • Stacked, centred

Mark above, name below, everything on one axis. For a square space: an avatar, a stamp, the back of a card.

  • Stacked, left

The same stack hung off a left margin instead of a centre line. It sits better in a document, a letterhead or the corner of a page.

  • Mono, engineered

The name set in the label face: caps, tracked wide, both lines the same size. It reads as equipment rather than as a studio, which suits the infrastructure half of the business.

  • Reversed

Name first, mark last. It reads as a signature rather than as a badge, and it is the version that works at the end of a line rather than the start of one.

  • Tile, beside

The boxed mark instead of the bare letter. The tile is the only version that survives a busy or coloured background, so this is the lockup for somebody else's surface.

  • Ruled

A hairline between mark and name, at the full height of both. It is the co-branding rule turned inward, and it gives the name somewhere to start.

  • Tracked to width

Technologies letter-spaced until it spans exactly the width of Bonang above it. The two words lock into a rectangle, which is the oldest trick in identity and still the most solid.

  • Spark separated

The star out of the middle of the mark, used as the joint. The one place the ornament earns a place inside the logo itself rather than beside it.

  • Tile, stacked

Tile above, name below. This is the app icon and its caption, and the version that goes on a pull-up banner where it will be read from four metres away.

  • Baseline aligned

The mark at full size with the name sitting on its bottom edge rather than through its middle. The mark leads and the name follows, which is the arrangement for a big application.

  • Enclosed

Mark and name inside one hairline box, divided by a rule. It behaves like a stamp: it holds together on a photograph, and it never needs clear space negotiated with anybody.

  • Inline descriptor

Technologies set small and dropped to the baseline of Bonang rather than under it. The most compact of the full-name lockups, for a narrow header or an email signature.

Choosing one

Send the number to info@bonangtech.com and it becomes the lockup: it replaces what the header prints today, it gets drawn as artwork rather than as live type, and it lands on the brand page as a download in both inks. Two of them can win if they are doing different jobs, a horizontal one for the header and a stacked one for square spaces, but not more than two, because a system with three primary lockups has none.

Want one of these drawn properly?

Tell us which number and we will cut it as artwork, in both inks, at every size, and put it on the brand page by the end of the week.
